When Journey Latin America ran its first escorted group trip in 1981, they were trail-blazing across a largely unexplored continent.Most roads were unpaved - land journeys were long, bumpy and precarious and the local transport available consisted of antiquated rickety buses and trucks.The hotel infrastructure was rudimentary - sometimes we found ourselves staying in places run by religious communities or at the other end of the spectrum, houses of lesser repute.You couldn’t find a Mars bar or a Heineken in those days - meals frequently consisted of a piece of unidentifiable meat squatting on a bed of soggy rice.

Now all that has changed - transport, hotels and restaurants are much more comfortable and sophisticated, and the choice is staggering.

JLA have many imitators, but their long-standing relationship with local suppliers, the presence of their innovative staff on the ground and their experienced Tour Leaders, ensure that they are still the best.

JLA is still an independent company managed by its founding directors. They have a close relationship with their reliable network of local contacts, many of whom they have worked with for over 20 years. But the continent really does sell itself - cloaked in a mantle of glorious scenery, from icy peaks and translucent glaciers through the extremes of sun-scorched deserts and dripping jungles, some twenty countries are peppered with the evocative vestiges of empires gone by - while the markets, music and melodramas of daily life provide endless fascination for the visitor.

Group size
Group sizes vary. The maximum is normally twenty but some trips operate with a maximum of sixteen. If the actual size of the group is important, please let us know. We have the experience to tell you which departures generally go full, and which do not. If you’d prefer to travel with 9 others rather than 19, we’ll try to point you towards the right departure.

Who else will be in the group?
The short answer to 'Who travels with Journey Latin America?' is 'Everyone'! It can depend on a number of factors, but as a general rule about half the people on any one trip come as singles, the rest as couples or friends. Since we all travel together, friendships form quickly. There are no age restrictions other than common sense would impose, so long as you are prepared to take the rough with the smooth.

Journeys
These Small Group Journeys are adventurous in spirit - they make use of public transport where appropriate and, where possible, stay in small family-run hotels to get to know the local people;they seek out new trails, local fiestas, quirky bars or museums - but always guaranteeing a decent level of comfort.
